When Cash Stops Moving, Everything Else Does Too

India’s cash economy doesn’t run on intention; it runs on execution. Cash-in-Transit companies sit at the operational heart of that execution: collecting, counting, securing, and redistributing money that keeps banks funded, ATMs loaded, and retail tills reconciled. At the scale CMS Info Systems operates, the gap between cash collected and cash settled isn’t just an operational metric. It’s a balance sheet problem.

CMS needed a partner who could walk into a secured vault facility, handle high settlement volumes, verify everything in real time, and settle fast. That’s the kind of work airpay was built for.

About CMS Info Systems

CMS Info Systems is India’s largest cash management company listed on NSE and BSE and deeply embedded in the infrastructure that keeps the country’s physical cash economy moving.

Every year, CMS processes over ₹6 lakh crore in cash, manages more than 90,000 ATMs, and serves over 2,33,000 business touchpoints across India. With approximately 35,000 employees operating nationwide, CMS isn’t a vendor to India’s cash economy. It is part of the backbone.

At that scale, every part of the operation has to work. There is no room for friction in the settlement chain.

The Problem: Counted Cash That Isn’t Settling

The vault is a pause point, not an endpoint. Once cash arrives at a CMS facility- counted, verified, and lodged- it enters a waiting phase before it settles into client accounts. That wait, even when short, compounds:

  • Processed cash sits idle instead of moving back into the financial system
  • Finance teams carry large overnight balances- exposure that grows with volume
  • Downstream clients absorb the delay in their own working capital cycles

Solving this required a partner who could show up consistently at institutional vault locations, work at scale without friction, complete OTP-verified pickups on the spot, and settle- same day or the next business day. That’s the brief airpay accepted.

How the Partnership Works

airpay’s field agents travel directly to CMS’s secured vault locations- where large amounts of already-counted, already-verified cash are ready for the next stage. This isn’t a retail collection model. The volumes are larger, the documentation requirements are tighter, and every transaction produces a real-time audit record that both parties can stand behind.

The process is clean and consistent:

  1. Collection- CMS collects cash from banks, ATM operators, and retail clients and brings it back to secured vault facilities.
  2. Verification & Lodgement- Cash is counted, verified, and lodged in the vault, ready for pickup.
  3. Agent Dispatch- airpay dispatches a trained field agent to the vault, timed to the settlement cut-off window wherever possible.
  4. OTP-Verified Pickup- The agent cross-checks the cash against the lodgement record. Both parties complete an OTP-verified transaction on the airpay app- a tamper-proof, real-time record created before the cash changes hands.
  5. Settlement- airpay settles the equivalent amount into CMS’s account. Collections before 6 PM settle the same day (T+0). Collections after 6 PM settle the next business day (T+1).

The Numbers

MetricDetail
Monthly Settlement Volume₹1,000 Cr – ₹14,000 Cr
Collection ModelVault-based pickup by trained field agents
Settlement Speed T+0 (before 6 PM) or T+1 (after 6 PM)
Audit Trail Every pickup logged in real time, OTP-verified

The range of ₹1,000 to ₹14,000 crore in a single month reflects the natural seasonality of the cash management business. The consistency across that range reflects something else: the trust CMS has extended to this arrangement over time.

What It Delivers

For CMS Info Systems

  • Faster cash movement. Vault balances that used to sit overnight now settle the same day when collections clear the 6 PM cut-off.
  • A complete audit trail. Every pickup is logged in real time- giving CMS a clean, defensible record across the full settlement chain.
  • A model that scales. As CMS’s coverage expands, the settlement infrastructure grows with it.

For airpay

Proof at institutional scale. Running settlements of this size through a trained field agent network is a different category of work and a genuine proof point for the product.

Trust that opens doors. CMS’s confidence in this arrangement has opened conversations across India’s institutional segment.

Operational intelligence. Every collection at this volume deepens airpay’s understanding of how cash actually moves through India’s economy.

The Larger Picture

Digital payments have grown fast. But India’s cash economy is not a legacy story- it’s a live, daily function. ATMs need loading. Bank vaults need clearing. Retail tills need reconciling. CMS sits at the heart of all of it.

What this partnership represents isn’t just settlement speed or operational efficiency- though it delivers both. It represents the decision by one institution to hand over a genuinely consequential part of its operation to another, based on what actually happens in the field.

That kind of trust is built over time. And both airpay and CMS are still building.
